On a number of official open days every year, admission to all state-run archaeological sites, monuments and museums in Greece is free for every visitor. That includes world-famous sites such as the Acropolis, the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounio, Delphi, Mycenae and Epidaurus, plus museums like the National Archaeological Museum in Athens.
These days are a fantastic opportunity to experience Greece's heritage without an entrance fee — but they are also popular, so a little planning goes a long way.

In memory of Melina Mercouri, the late Minister of Culture.

International Monuments Day.
18 May
International Museums Day.
Last weekend of September
European Heritage Days.

National anniversary (“Oxi” Day).
First Sunday of every month (1 Nov – 31 Mar)
During the winter period, the first Sunday of each month is free admission.
Good to Know Before You Go
You still need a (free) ticket
Entry is free, but you must collect a free ticket in person at the site's ticket office. There is no charge — it is simply for entry control.
Online booking is closed
On free-entry days the e-ticketing system is switched off, so you cannot reserve a slot online in advance. Tickets are issued only at the entrance on the day.
Expect crowds — arrive early
Free days are very popular and queues build quickly, especially at the Acropolis. The earlier you arrive, the better your experience.
Always double-check
Opening hours can change and on some national holidays sites may be closed. It is wise to confirm on the official Greek Ministry of Culture website before you plan your day.

Yes — on the official open days, entry to the Acropolis and all state-run sites is free for everyone. You just collect a free ticket at the gate.
Can I book a free ticket online?
No. The online/e-ticketing system is closed on free days, so tickets are only available in person at the site on the day.
When is the best time to arrive?
As early as possible. Crowds and queues grow through the morning, so an early start makes a big difference.
Do these days apply to all museums?
